Charlie McKenna knows his stuff.
In our experience good barbecue makers always have the bug to teach, too, and Charlie McKenna of Lillie’s Q is no exception. He’s announced three different levels of classes aimed at three different levels of student, from the backyard enthusiast to the would-be competitor. The prices aren’t exactly cheap, but how often do you learn barbecue from someone whose resume includes Tru and Avenues as well as a bunch of competition BBQ trophies, so take a look at the offerings and you just might find them a bargain in helping you achieve your dream.
• Backyard BBQ Class— Charlie will come to your home and teach you (and up to five of your guests) everything about making good barbecue on whatever you have— from a Weber to a Big Green Egg to a gas grill. The class runs two to five hours (depending on what you’re cooking) and is $750 for up to six participants.
• Competition BBQ Class— Thought of competing? Charlie, winner of Memphis in May in 2007 in the whole pork shoulder category, will teach you the ins and outs of the competitions you plan to enter (Memphis BBQ Network or Kansas City BBQ Society). $1000 for an all-day session.
• Travel & Compete With the Lillie’s Q Team— Yes, that’s right— be part of the team when they travel on the competition BBQ circuit, helping prep and present “and (usually) win,” Charlie says. $3,000 for the weekend, airfare and lodging not included (we thought they sat up all night drinking and trading stories, what do they need lodging for?)
