Water Grill is reopening tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 P.M. following a month-long shutter to incorporate a breezier feel into the elegant 23-year-old Downtown restaurant. The first tables will be seated at 5:00 P.M. among the restaurant’s new open kitchen, spread of horseshoe-shaped and vintage Pullman booths, columns crafted from white subway tiles inlaid with antique mirrors, and a wrap-around, centrally located bar made from dark oak, with ten taps of craft brew, and in a sure descent towards the overly casual, television sets! Ugh, that new element makes us want to spit our Heavenly Hef all over the place. What else?

Elsewhere, there will be the eatery’s famous raw bar now served from a marble slab, while a new menu (not, it appears, from a new chef) includes dishes like fish and chips from real Atlantic cod served with kale, and Mediterranean loup de mer, as well as three to five whole fish prepared each day. The window coverings have officially come off of the grand dame restaurant, so anyone eager to see the refreshed room is invited to cruise by for a peek today. But if you can wait a day, reservations are still found at 213-891-0900.

Water Grill, 544 S. Grand Ave. Downtown.
