Last summer, Downtown’s Original Pantry ended its free pours of coffee to all who entered its ancient diner space. Now the neighborhood’s even older Phillippe’s is upping the ante itself, putting the kibosh on its current ten-cent price for a cup of coffee. Owners blame the rising cost of mud and clearly aren’t trying to gouge anyone here, as the price is rising to five times the earlier cost, now hovering at a not-so-brutal fifty cents per cup. So far, only one couple, who has taken the bus here from Seal Beach for 40 years, seems to be complaining. [LAT]
