This sure beats the candy-striping we did back in high school: Yesterday, Mayor Menino took a break from trash-talking Colorado beer to deliver his annual State of the City address. He also announced a fantastic new initiative for Boston’s Madison Park Technical Vocational High School that includes pairing aspiring chefs with two local success stories: Menton/No. 9 Park/etc.’s Barbara Lynch (a Southie native and Madison alum) and Gordon Hamersley of Hamersley’s Bistro.

It’s part of the Madison Park Business Partnership, designed to encourage local business partners to provide advice, jobs, and other resources to help transform the school. Interning for Barbara Lynch, who told the Times not long ago that she stole buses and served as a bookie while in high school, seems like it’d be worth a diploma on its own.
