Onetime Sausalito rock-and-roll hangout, the Trident, is getting revived in its former location, more recently home to Horizons restaurant. As Eater reports, Buena Vista Café owners Ron Davis and Bob Freeman are capitalizing on the America’s Cup to bring the 60s/70s-era restaurant back at its former, waterfront address at 558 Bridgeway.

They’ve already brought on former Michael Mina sous chef James Montejano to handle the food, and he’s been at work updating Horizons’ menu. The change, which is still contingent on some approvals from the Sausalito city council, will happen sometime in 2012.

Also in the works is a new upper-level deck, which will come in handy when it comes time to watch the races.

The original Trident, which lived here from 1966 to 1976, was a regular hangout of the legendary Bill Graham, who brought in stars like the Rolling Stones, and Janis Joplin had her own table as well. This site, a sort of informal archive about the Trident started by former bartender Mark Lomas, can tell you more about the history of the place, which includes an origin story about the Tequila Sunrise — former bartender Bobby Lazoff claims to have invented the drink here in the early 70s, and says it got wildly popular after he made one for Mick Jagger at a party and it soon became part of what Keith Richards later referred to as “the cocaine and tequila sunrise tour.”
