Short Cake, the bakery founded by Amy Pressman** of neighboring Short Order Burger, opens this Friday morning, December 16th, at 9:00 A.M. in The Original Farmers Market on Fairfax. The debut will kick-off with samples of sweet and savory things, alongside the shop’s single-origin, pour-over coffee from Nik Krankl, consultant Nancy Silverton’s nephew and owner of the lauded coffee bar Taste of Boston (it is, after all, a family affair and blood’s still thicker than mud). This Sunday, Silverton herself will guarantee a crowd by signing The Mozza Cookbook, from 12:00-2:00 P.M. at the bakery. So, what will you find at Short Cake?

Sadly, founder Amy Pressman passed away this fall, but Short Cake’s opening is the fulfillment of her vision and planning. She and Silverton, an informal partner and hands-on consultant, put care of the shop into the hands of former Anisette and La Brea Bakery bakers, Hourie Sahakian and Ramon Ramirez.

The team has been working for months on a line of freshly baked sweet and savory pastries and goods, featuring goodies like cookies, muffins, croissants, quiches, scones, bread pudding, and bars that employ local artisan products like Straus butter and milk, preserves from SQIRL, and chocolate from Tcho.

A press release tells us that there will specialty decorated short cakes with flavors like chocolate cardamom cream, apple cider spice, and chiffon with orange curd and meringue, along with personal-sized sweet pies. On the savory side, lunch and dinner items will include quiches with bacon, leek, and comte, quiche with swiss chard and fennel, bacon and cheddar crossaints, ham and cheese tartines, turkey and wild mushroom tartines, and bun bread pudding with spinach and mushrooms.

Short Cake bakery, replacing market mainstay Thee’s Continental, will start serving this Friday at 9:00 A.M. and will stay open from 9:00 A.M.-9:00 P.M. seven days a week.

Short Cake, at The Original Farmers Market, 6333 W. 3rd St. Stall #316. Los Angeles. 323-761-7976.

**A correction has been made to clarify that Nancy Silverton is not formally involved as an owner of Short Cake.
