We now have an update about the opening of Mozzeria, the deaf-owned, Neapolitan pizzeria coming to the former Il Cantuccio space on 16th Street (between Guerrero and Dolores). According to Urban Daddy, Friday is opening night, and as we discussed recently, owners Melody and Russel Stein believe it’s the first deaf-owned restaurant to appear in a major city in the U.S. Wherever possible, the Steins — who are both deaf — employed deaf contractors to work on the restaurant, and they’ve even got some deaf dishwashers as well. But fear not: All the servers will be able to hear your order, though some will obviously need to be fluent in ASL too. And if you want a sneak peek, check out one of their benefit tastings this week.

Mozzeria is doing two benefit test dinners this week: one tonight, benefiting the California School for the Deaf, Fremont and the Deafhood Foundation; and one on Thursday benefiting Dianne Feinstein Elementary School.

And yes, they have the same fab “Ferrari of pizza ovens,” made by Napoli’s Stefano Ferrara, that Una Pizza Napoletana and Cupola have.

As for the menu, the full one won’t be available until Friday (look for it to get posted here), but Melody assures us there will be both traditional Neapolitan pies, like the standard margherita, as well as non-traditional pies like her favorite, roast duck on hoisin sauce with spring onion. Also, there will be small plates and pastas like lemon-ricotta gnocchi in sage butter, as well as something they’re being cagey about called the Mozzeria Bar, which Melody promises is “so delicious.” We think it has something to do with fried cheese.

Mozzeria - 3228 16th Street, between Guerrero and Dolores - Opening Friday, December 9, 5:30 to 11 p.m.
