Matt Levine of Padma pick Sons of Essex writes in to say the restaurant is launching brunch this weekend. At least one of the dishes, a macaroni-and-cheese omelette, seems gunning to give Shopsin’s, across the way, a run for its mac-and-cheese pancakes. Jewish-leaning dishes (trend alert!) like the Sloppy Judah — a sandwich of eggs and Manischewitz-braised short rib — and the Eggs Benedictowitz (potato pancakes, smoked salmon) pay playful homage to the neighborhood’s history, while the promising-sounding breakfast Cubano nods to another of the old LES’s ethnic groups.
