Canele, Corina Weibl’s Atwater charmer that gave you a primitive first peek at the Short Order burger, seduced at least one Chicago chef with its fried chicken, and counts The Tupac of Twizzlers as family, is gearing up for the next night of its “Friends Cook at Canele” series. This coming Tuesday, guests will find former Eater L.A. and Tasting Table editor, current Angeleno restaurant critic, and frequent Grub Street guest-star, Lesley Balla, in the kitchen, as Canele executes her menu, titled “Sunday Gravy on Tuesday.” What can you expect from the collaboration?

Braciola, baaaallllin!

Balla’s $35, three-course menu is based on the Youngstown, Ohio, Italian-American community she grew up in, where meatballs and homemade tomato sauce were present at everything, from your wedding to your funeral. With that spirit in mind, she’s starting dinner out with an antipasto salad, followed by a main course of rigatoni with pork and a meat ragu, as well as the scribe’s eponymous meatballs, and braciole, a favorite preparation she notes is a rarity in L.A. Cannoli will follow for dessert, while Balla promises she’ll be in the kitchen to prep, and possibly even work the line, through the night, enabling everyone to critique the critic for a change.

Dinner will be served from 5:30-10:30, December 6th, with no reservations taken.

Canele, 3219 Glendale Blvd. Atwater Village. 323-666-7133.
