Are Marlowe’s Baked Oysters the Best in the City?

Looks like the food critic everyone loves to hate has had a busy week. Michael Bauer’s been all over the map lately and he’s been eating everything from oysters to coq au vin. A couple weeks ago he was searching for the city’s best French onion soup and now he’s on the hunt for the best baked or grilled oysters.

He argues that the New England clam chowder-style oysters at Marlowe are “in the competition for the best” in the Bay, but also provides praise to Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen’s oysters bingo and Boxing Room’s char-grilled oysters. He’s also quick to remind us that Marlowe “still has the best hamburger and fries in the city.”

In other news, he dined and enjoyed dishes at the French Laundry, Absinthe, AQ, Cafe de Amis, and 1833. Phew! He says we can expect a review of Monterey’s 1833 in the Chron on Christmas Day, but what about the other restaurants? Why, exactly, did he have Sunday lunch at the French Laundry?
