It’s always difficult losing one the quintessential neighborhood restaurants, the one you think will always be there because it’s always been there. Evan Kleiman–restaurateur, cookbook author, host of KCRW’s “Good Food” program–announced yesterday that she will close her longstanding Melrose restaurant, Angeli Caffe. Via her Facebook page: “I’m bereft and verklempt sharing this news. January 8th is our last night. Please come say bye and share a couple of ‘last meals’ with us.”

Kleiman opened the rustic Italian restaurant in 1984, serving food inspired by the trattorias she loved while visiting Italy. Some of her original staff still works there today, and she’s easily fed a couple generations of families. She told Daily Dish: “It was my personal mission to get my employees past the worst of the recession, and I absorbed a lot of losses personally in order to do that and just can’t do it anymore.”

Angeli will be open every day until the last day, including Mondays when it’s traditionally been closed. Go in, eat another pocket of that piping hot bread straight from the oven, another plate of that light-as-air ricotta gnocchi, a glass of wine for a toast. And not just to pay your respects. Always thinking of her employees, Kleiman says she needs the business to make her final payroll.
