Dueling Starstudded Bake Sales This Weekend

“Yard Sale!?!” Photo: courtesy Naha

We’re not sure how the two best-sounding bake sales of the year wound up on the same weekend, but since one of them runs both Saturday and Sunday, there’s no reason on earth you can’t hit both. First up is the self-proclaimed Chefs’ Yard Sale happening not in a yard, but at Naha, Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., to benefit the Green City Market and the educational programs of Les Dames d’Escoffier. On the yard sale side, chefs from all over town have donated used items from the kitchens and collections of restaurants including Frontera, Alinea, Charlie Trotter’s and others, as well as— poignantly— the late Green City Market founder Abby Mandel’s cookie cutter collection. On the bake sale side, there’s a pretty amazing lineup of the city’s best pastry chefs contributing goodies, including Patrick Fahy (Cafe des Architectes), Paula Haney (Hoosier Mama), Gale Gand, Mindy Segal (Hot Chocolate), Matthew Rice (Nightwood) and more.

Meanwhile, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, pioneering and city-battling shared kitchen space Logan Square Kitchen will hold their Fall Pastry Market, with treats from Jo Snow Syrups, Rare Birds Preserves, Fritz Pastry, Celestial Kitchens, Sweet Spot Macarons and many others. Longman & Eagle mixologist (or as he styles himself, “intoxicologist”) Derek Alexander will be pouring his “Berrien County Cocktail,” and Brenton Engel, from Lula Cafe, will be serving “Through the Woods” on Saturday.
