Bauer Raves About the Tamales at Mateo’s Cocina Latina

Calling the Yucatan-inspired food “soulful” and “creative,” Michael Bauer writes a mostly gushing review of Mateo’s Cocina Latina in Healdsburg, praising chef Mateo Granados for making “among the best tamales I’ve had.” (Note, with Mr. Bauer, we never get an unqualified superlative, and generally nothing is ever the best.) He also enjoys the tacos, and writes that “every dish … comes with vegetables that taste as if they were just pulled from the garden.” Also, he loves the tostada with ground beef, and calls a deep-fried rock cod dish “beautifully presented.” All told, he gives the place two and a half stars, with three for food — they get knocked down a touch for service. But we think the place still stands a chance at being in his top ten openers list! [Chron]
