Summer is fading, but there is still some encouraging news left for the season: It’s already time for Oktoberfest (as if you didn’t drink enough beer this summer). This Saturday will find two Oktoberfest events popping off, one for Hollywood day-walkers at District 13 and a three-week celebration for authentic German re-creationists at Wirsthaus. Yes, the famous brew-haha at Alpine Village is already in full swing, but ever since they gave das boot to Angel City, we won’t let them see our lederhosen. So, where to go to pound German beers without the hotel rental in Torrance?
This Saturday, Big Wang’s, District 13, and Stout will form a unified front by closing off their parking lots at Selma and Cahuenga to pour sponsored Beck’s Oktoberfest and Sierra’s Kellerweis. There will also be Red Bull for some reason, probably for the Big Wang’s fans.
The party goes from noon to 10:00 P.M. if you can survive that long, with a $20 entry fee earning you a commemorative mug and a t-shirt, as well as the first beer. That’s right, you only get one free beer, plus the schwag for $20, then every subsequent 34 oz. pour is an additional eight bucks. Also, they’re only serving Bavarian pretzels, so if you want to eat lest you drown in beer sudes, you’ll have to head into the restaurants.
More promising are the events scheduled at Wirtshaus, the German restaurant that differentiates itself from the barbarian hordes by claiming ownership by real-life Germans. Following suit, Wirtshaus is organizing a three-week Oktoberfest celebration from September 17th to October 8th. This Saturday, the event starts with our own German Consul doing keg-stands tapping a keg at 2:00 P.M. From there the restaurant plans to turn its ping pong room into an Oktoberfest tent, with communal tables, Spaten decor, and live music on Fridays and Saturdays (ping pong tournaments will still be held every Thursday night). There will also be a changing selection of drink and food specials that highlight seasonal German specialties, to be posted regularly on Facebook and Twitter.
If pounding beers and drunkenly attempting the chicken dance just isn’t your bag, Wirsthaus also plans an upcoming dinner that will pair German food with German beer on September 20th and German eats with German wine on the 27th. This should tide German gourmands over until Tony DiSalvo brings his awesome spaetzle back to Whist.
