Many are still wailing over last month’s shutter of Culver City’s MoKo, which, for a brief moment, gave the Westside an Asian eatery finally worth obsessing over. The restaurant’s owner, who may or may not have just bitten off more than he could chew, helped issue official word that the closing was completely necessary due to the suffering health of chef Gary Robins, a heavily decorated NYC vet who made a huge splash while popping up locally at Giorgio’s Cucina. The Glutster now reports very encouraging news that Robins is at least well enough to come back to the kitchen, this time cooking German Oktoberfest creations at Koreatown’s Biergarten (a classically-trained U.S. chef dropping Korean cuisine to cook German food at a Korean-German restaurant? The mind spins.) When can you catch Robins in KTown with a few new creations?
Robins will be back in the house this coming weekend on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2nd, serving a schnitzel burger of Niman Ranch veal, Bavarian pretzels, weiss wurst, and possibly a few potato-y things that Javier Cabral notes bridge German kartoffelpuffer with Korean jeon. Very nice to hear the chef’s back in action with a new inspiration, whether or not his current stop is just a temporary one or not before he takes flight again.
