Joanne Weir, who we recently reported was launching her own wine label, is also getting back in the restaurant business after two decades primarily as a food writer and PBS chef. As the Chron reports today, Weir is teaming with local restaurant mogul Larry Mindel (Il Fornaio, Poggio) to open Copita (739 Bridgeway) in Sausalito, which will be a Mexican restaurant and tequila bar. The idea was spawned after Weir and Mindel had a little margarita mix-off — Weir being fresh from writing a whole book on tequila — and Mindel was most impressed with her version.

The restaurant will seat about 50 (it’s the former Piccolo Teatro space, and kind of long and narrow) and will capitalize on Poggio’s nearby organic garden. And while Weir will be overseeing the food and drinks and helping create the menu, the partners will be hiring a chef. (As you may know, Weir did a stint in the kitchen at Chez Panisse back in the day, between 1985 and 1990).

They’re aiming for a spring opening.
