Mario’s and Miko’s Close for the Season

As you’ve no doubt noticed, the temperature has dipped some 20 to 30 degrees since last week. So long, summer. With the end of the warm weather, it makes sense that some Italian ice joints around town are also closing for the season. Perhaps the most famous Italian ice stand in town, Mario’s Italian Lemonade, will close this Sunday, September 18. (On a side note, Mike Gebert has an interesting explanation as to why Mario’s always closes around mid-September.) Also, both of Miko’s Italian Ice locations closed earlier this week, but the Bucktown location won’t be empty for long. It is getting ready to transform into something completely different.

According to the press release, Miko’s Italian Ice will soon reopen as Miko’s Flipside on October 1. The tiny shop will serve coffee that is brewed to order, hot cider, hot chocolate, along with a range of baked snacks. The shop will run from October through April, and will offer free wifi and “excellent soul music.” That’s reason enough to stop by.
