Coming swiftly to 115 New Montgomery is a new concept in sandwich shops called The Melt. Founded by Flip video magnate Jonathan Kaplan, with consulting help from chef Michael Mina, the idea is to simplify and speed up the ordering and pick-up process for busy lunch-seekers using cell phones and QR codes. You order your custom grilled cheese sandwich online, and then you show up at the counter, scan the code on your phone, and your pick up your sandwich within minutes. Or maybe seconds! SFist got a tour of the first location — it’s actually the first of 500 planned nationwide — and from the sound of it, the sandwiches are simple, homey, and not the ultra-crunchy kind on artisan bread that you might find at, say, American Grilled Cheese Kitchen. It’s set to open by month’s end, next week, and more locations will follow including one at 345 Spear Street and one at Pier 1. Also, if you follow them on Twitter or Facebook, there could be a free sandwich in it for you this Friday, August 26. [SFist]
