Whether you loved him or you hated him, there’s no denying that Joey Vento, the Geno’s cheesesteak tycoon who the Inky reports died last night from a heart attack, was as much a part of the fabric of this city as Benjamin Franklin and Legionnaires Disease. Though he will forever be remembered as the guy who put a sign on the front of his shop stating, “This is AMERICA, when ordering please SPEAK ENGLISH,” Vento was reportedly a generous philanthropist who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for police charities, and donated $60,000 worth of food to a local hospice each year. Here’s hoping they speak English in heaven. [Inquirer]
