If there’s one thing we’ve learned in the last few weeks, it’s that there aren’t nearly enough restaurants for proper okonomiyaki–those lovely Japanese savory pancakes–in L.A. While many izakayas have okonomiyaki on their menus, Jonathan Gold has often said none are good; in fact last week he claimed most are “greasy, underflavored and burnt.” Except for those from the Glowfish Truck, which he found surprisingly wonderful. But Gottsui, officially opening on Sawtelle tomorrow, may be a glimmer of pancake hope.

The charmingly spare teppanyaki restaurant has been gearing up with a few friends-and-family nights this week, but they’re ready to bring several varieties of okonomiyaki to the public this weekend. Although we’re yet to see the menu, this might be the Raku alternative we’ve all been waiting for.
