Brad Saltzman, owner of L.A. Creamery, writes (and not without a little sadness) to let us know that he closed The Westfield Topanga location of his business last night, telling us “there is absolutely no business there” and very little foot traffic. This naturally runs contrary to what he was told by the higher-ups at Westfield, who readied Saltzman for 3,000 people a day coming to the mall. “We stuck it out as long as we could but realized it will never get better because there are simply no people to capture,” Saltzman states in an email. So, what’s the good news for this unique artisan ice cream maker?

Fortunately for Saltzman, he says his store is doing blockbuster business at Americana at Brand, turning his own brand off of indoor malls for the time being and embracing the outdoor approach. The Glendale location should benefit from the new addition of Julia Flick, the former GM of Sweet Rose Creamery, who just joined L.A. Creamery.

Saltzman notes that L.A. Creamery ice cream sandwiches are also taking off and can currently be found at Umami Valli and Amici Trattoria. Furthermore, he is looking at space in Newport, down the street from Mozza, for a new location of L.A. Creamery.
