Last month Paul Kahan sent out a few hints about a potential food truck for Big Star. The idea of Kahan-supported mobile eatery was tantalizing to say the least, and Eater quickly filled us in with some of the details: the truck was driven all the way from California; it would get an “aesthetic makeover” ; and chef de cuisine Justin Large would create a menu “compliant with current laws.” We hadn’t heard anything about the project for nearly a month until a reader sent us this picture of a bright yellow truck parked right out in front of the popular Wicker Park joint. So, is it ready?

When we reached out today, the restaurant related that it was “still working out logistics,” and so no opening date had been scheduled. Though the truck sits in the restaurant’s parking lot, it will still have to follow same legal restrictions as other mobile eateries around the city. Those rules seem to make it especially hard to serve pre-made tacos, as the tortillas would get soggy in a matter of minutes. The only taco truck we’ve seen out on the street is Taquero Fusion, and the Tribune didn’t especially like what it tried, giving it a pretty harsh review. Tamale Spaceship Charros probably has the right idea by serving tamales.

Anyway, we doubt Big Star would serve us soggy tacos. We’ll keep you updated on any further details.
