National grocery giant Supervalu, which controls SoCal’s ubiquitous Albertson’s brand, plans to turn 40 of its stores into “zero-waste” zones that would utilize strategic alliances, composting, recycling, and the Fresh Rescue food bank donation program to keep 90% of its waste out of landfills. The move, which will start at various locations of Albertson’s, echoes earlier, successful attempts to embrace “no waste” at two Santa Barbara Albertson’s. The move could gain the supermarket brand some much-needed support if this grocery worker strike goes down. In any case, it should keep all those darned freegans concentrated on Trader Joe’s.
