Actually Pretty Awesome: The Fried-Chicken Sliders at The Lookout

We weren’t expecting much. It’s bar food, after all, at a bar not terribly well known for their food. We’ve had a few decent tacos at The Lookout (3600 16th Street, at Market) in the last six months or so, but only recently sampled their selection of sliders and were more than a little impressed! The classic burger slider was tasty enough, but it was the fried chicken slider that really shined: a tender, juicy, crisp-fried, well seasoned chicken patty on a perfectly griddle-toasted bun with Old Bay aioli, lettuce, and tomato. Simple, un-greasy, and perfect drunk food.

Not to mention it’s about one-sixth the size of Bakesale Betty’s famed behemoth, so you don’t feel overstuffed even if you eat two.

We noticed recently that they’d changed the food menu and reconfigured the back dining room — moving away from deep-dish and thin-crust pizzas, full-size burgers, etc., in favor of bar-friendly food you can eat with your hands: bruschettas, sliders, and tacos. Chef Dominique Garcia has been in charge the whole way through, and her terrific double-fried french fries, pollo verde tacos, and corn dog bites all deserve mention too.

But the next time you’re stuck in the Castro wondering where to get a good, cheap bite to go with your booze, look no further.
