One of the tastiest lunches we’ve had in our recent wanderings comes from Top Chef alum Preeti Mistry and her 11th Street lunch operation inside the Garage Café called Juhu Beach Club. The space is basically a bodega/liquor store with a deli setup at the front, and Mistry’s been doing a lunch-only menu of hot sandwiches, salads, and snacks for the past few months. The best thing we’ve tried so far is a special on Taco Tuesdays: Uncle’s Chicken Curry Tacos with Auntie’s cabbage.
We’ve all seen Korean tacos, and even some that are vaguely French. But Mistry’s up to something very delicious with her version of chicken curry stuffed inside tortillas and topped with pickled red cabbage, cilantro, and raita. The curry is well spiced and the whole dish, with the acid of the cabbage, the rich spiciness of the curry, and cool yogurt, is perfectly balanced. We could eight of these things, but actually two of them — for a mere eight bucks — is plenty for a filling lunch. Try some yourself, next Tuesday.
