The Coffee Shop’s long-awaited project in the former Empire Diner space, the Highliner, soft-opened in Chelsea a few days ago. Owner Charles Milite tells us he’s still in “very, very quiet opening” mode as chef Jeremie Tomczak (formerly of Aquavit and Laurent Tourondel’s restaurants) expands the menu from a handful of items to its ultimate state (it’ll eventually offer breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner, as well as a late-night items served till 5 a.m.). This week it’s opening around noon; starting Monday, it’ll start opening at 8 a.m. One thing that won’t change, even though the inside got a full gut renovation: the Empire Diner signage on the facade. A menu of “classic American cocktails” is already in place, and the 80 outdoor seats have already hit the sidewalk. Here’s what you’ll be able to order when the Highliner kicks into full swing.
