After threatening the Heart of the City Farmers’ Market with a lawsuit, the animal rights group known as LGBT Compassion can claim victory as the market announces that they’ll be ending live poultry sales on May 27. Unfortunately, the primary consumers of the live birds are low-income, Chinese-speaking immigrants, and they are not likely to get the message in time to find a new source for cheap birds. Also, as the Appeal reports, this move takes away the ability of this relatively poor community to support small farmers. The vendor, Raymond Young Live Poultry, has held a permit to sell live fowl in San Francisco since 1990. [SF Appeal, Earlier]
