The Villager reports that neighborhood activist Janet Freeman has died of lung cancer at the age of 60. Some considered Freeman an unrecognized Lower East Side heroine for her championing of tenant rights, but as the title of an Observer profile had it, she was also considered the Queen Busy Bee of Elizabeth Street by the brokers and operators whom she butted heads with in community board meetings. Her biggest success there was her stand against Ivan Kanes Forty Deuce, the club that was slated to go around the corner from her Elizabeth Street apartment of over 30 years (that apartment is shown here). Freemans services were yesterday.
