The Villager reports that neighborhood activist Janet Freeman has died of lung cancer at the age of 60. Some considered Freeman “an unrecognized Lower East Side heroine” for her championing of tenant rights, but as the title of an Observer profile had it, she was also considered the “Queen Busy Bee of Elizabeth Street” by the brokers and operators whom she butted heads with in community board meetings. Her biggest success there was her stand against Ivan Kane’s Forty Deuce, the club that was slated to go around the corner from her Elizabeth Street apartment of over 30 years (that apartment is shown here). Freeman’s services were yesterday.
