Even though no official plans to privatize or modernize the state’s liquor stores are expected to come forth until after the June 30 state budget deadline, that’s not stopping Pennsyltucky rubes state legislators from putting forth proposals to change the way we buy our booze. The latest scheme, if enacted, would allow the state’s 1,200 beer distributors to sell wine and liquor through a special permit, the Delco Times reports. While not quite as harsh as calls from other PA lawmakers to scrap the state’s liquor stores and current rules on alcohol sales, which haven’t really changed much over the past 78 years, the proposed legislation is still ruffling feathers. Wendell Young IV, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776, which represents liquor store employees, is firing back, saying the pitch is one-sided. Describing the plan as “silly,” he argues that if the state allows beer distributors to sell wine and spirits, it should in turn allow liquor stores to sell beer. [Delco Times]
