We brought you news back in March about Hawker Fare (2300 Webster Street, Oakland), the new Asian street food eatery being launched by Commis chef James Syhabout in a space that was once home to a Thai restaurant owned by his mother. Today we finally get an opening date, via the Scoop, which is next Tuesday, May 17, initially for lunch/early dinner only, and starting dinner service likely by May 26. As discussed earlier, Momofuku Ssäm Bar vet Justin Yu will be at the helm as chef de cuisine, and the food is going to be hearty, cheap, and satisfying with stuff like spicy fried chicken wings and kao mun gai, which are rice bowls with aromatic poached chicken served with ginger and cucumbers. The plan was to be BYOB for a while, but we’ll be confirming details as we go. [Scoop]
