Early in the morning on Sunday, a white Chrysler crashed into Manny’s Coffee Shop & Deli on the Near South Side. We’re written about cars crashing into restaurants before, but never about an accident happening at such an esteemed local institution. Manny’s prepares what is arguably Chicago’s best pastrami sandwich, and is also much loved by the city’s political elite (Obama goes for the corned beef when he’s in town). Anyway, according to owner Kenneth Raskin, the car had crashed into the private dining room, and, fortunately, that was a “lucky place to get hit.” That means that neither the distinctive counter nor any of the smoked meats were harmed. Raskin claims the Manny’s will be open as usual on Monday. While the security footage missed the crash, police found debris from the car, and claim that it is from a 1990s Chrysler Concorde or Cirrus. Should we start a task force to track this guy down?
