Tonga Room Gets Yet Another Reprieve, For Now

The developers intent on razing the the Fairmont Hotel’s 1960’s tower, and in the process demolishing the arguably historic Tiki bar known as the Tonga Room, got their final blow last week after the hotel workers’ union voted thumbs down on the plan to go part-condo. The fear is that hotel jobs will be lost in the process, however Matier & Ross are reporting in the Chron that investors are now looking to sell the hotel. In any event, the Tonga Room remains open so long as the hotel does, or until further notice. We tried following up with Republic/Bin 38 owner Peter Scully — who had earlier expressed interest in acquiring the Tonga Room’s assets and relocating the bar — but his reply was “No comment.”
