Smorgasburg Launching at the Brooklyn Flea

Now that’s it’s expanding to new digs in Williamsburg, the Brooklyn Flea has gone and made an honest food market out of its mouth-watering collection of vendors, to be called (adorably!) Smorgasburg. Awww. Just to be clear: The Flea will continue to operate in Fort Greene on Saturdays, while the Smorgasburg will spend Saturdays at the Williamsburg location, which will then host the Brooklyn Flea on Sundays. Got that? Good.

In a statement on Brownstoner the founders write, “As the food component of the Flea has continued to get more popular, we have been facing one of those rich-man’s problems: Too many exciting new food applicants, not enough food spots.” So now there’ll be 100-plus vendors “of every stripe,” plus a group of Greenmarket favorites like Brooklyn Grange and Hot Bread Kitchen. More spots means the market is currently taking applications, and so far they’ve sampled “mozzarella from a Jean Georges refugee and mustard from a former Tom Colicchio staffer.” When it launches May 21, Smorgasburg will be the “city’s largest outdoor food market” — and essentially the awesomest food court ever to grace this mall-averse town.
