Ever since Rob Eshmann bitched about our lack of seaside dining, there seems to have been a noticeable drive to lend our coastal dining scene a little improvement, with crusty old barnacles like Gladstone’s, The Malibu Inn, The Beachcomber, and Sunset restaurant undergoing revamps, as well as reported plans from Nobu, Wolfgang Puck, and Bui Lounge closer to the beach. But what might really eat The Lobster’s lunch is the opening of The Hungry Cat’s third restaurant space tonight in Santa Monica, as reported today by Eater.
You probably know the score here already. Just like Hungry Cat locations in Hollywood and Santa Barbara, the restaurant comes from Suzanne Goin and husband David Lentz, who is the executive chef here. Specializing in seafood and local ingredients, Hungry Cat almost gets as much attention for its dense pugburger as it does its servings of oysters and urchins from a raw bar and chorizo with mussels and seafood towers from the menu.
The new space takes over Bruce Marder’s shuttered Brass Cap, now painted blue next to Giorgio Baldi with a very clean, slightly nostalgic beachy look of striped chairs, stuffed fish, and deep oceanic blues. Dinner starts at 5:00 P.M. tonight, with Lentz planning to add brunch by June 1.
