You Can Add ‘Hungriest’ to Philly’s Not-So-Stellar Superlatives

Man, it sure sucks to be Philly! In addition to already being named America’s fattest, ugliest, rudest and most toxic city, Food Research and Action Center is adding hungriest to our dear City of Brotherly Love’s growing collection of not-so-stellar superlatives. Turns out that more than 30 percent of households in Pennsylvania’s First Congressional District, a large swath of the southeastern PA that encompasses virtually half the city — including some of its most impoverished neighborhoods and toniest restaurants — don’t have enough money to buy food and feed their families. U.S. Rep. Bob Brady who represents the district says he’s committed to working with state, city and anti-hunger advocates to “aggressively combat” the situation. Pardon our cynicism for a minute, but we’re doubtful there’s a speedy solution to the problem. Not with budget hawks looking to cut every imaginable source of public funding. [NBC Philadelphia]
