In case you missed it due to yesterday’s implementation of the sexier outdoor smoking ban, Santa Monica Daily Press is quick to remind us that the city’s plastic bag ban also started yesterday. Since nobody really smokes here anyway, this small morsel of legislation is probably more of a big deal for L.A., considering that a ten-cent charge will be added for each and every plastic bag that gets carried out of stores and restaurants here. On their side, Bay City shoppers still have a six-month grace period to “totally forget” their reusable canvas petri-dishes, which will also allow retailers to use up their supply of the plastic and find alternatives. Come September 1st, however, the powers that be will suddenly get serious about how you get your takeout. [SMDP]
