A couple of weeks after sounding the alarm bells, Jeffrey Ruhalter (the freewheeling butcher known to give gratis welcome-to-the-neighborhood steaks to new customers) has sent a letter to the Lo-Down indicating that he has “temporally” (meaning temporarily?) closed Jeffrey’s Meat Market. Though his landlord agreed not to raise his rent, he writes: “I need time to re-group, to tap into resources that can help keep this piece of antiquity alive. I’m in trouble and I’m going to rely on fate to decide the future of my store; my families history.” Elsewhere in the meataverse, Urbandaddy reports that Oxley’s Carvery (not to be confused with Croxley Ales) has opened at 202A Mott Street near Spring Street (212-343-0550). No, you won’t get free steaks, but you will get meat carvers in bowler hats!
The shop is closed today, but a peek inside revealed plenty of Union Jacks and a menu of sandwiches, including a boneless leg of lamb; a beef top round; a braised pork with corn, cranberry, and stuffing; Lincolnshire sausage with sautéed onions, broccolini, and mushrooms; and turkey (fresh herb or pepper) with homemade stuffing and gravy. Your sides: baked potato, steak-frites, corn on the cob, and broccolini. Plus, every Sunday there’s a traditional roast of Angus beef, baked potatoes, and Yorkshire pudding. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon till 8 p.m. and Sunday noon till 4 p.m.
