The Wall Street Journal ventures to a farm in Hong Kong’s New Territories, where 20,000 chickens listen to a mix of classical, jazz, rap, and Cantopop (Cantonese pop music) each day. Farmer Fong Chi-hung eases them into “age-appropriate” soundtracks: 15 days or younger listen to soft love songs; 16 to 30 days old get disco. Once they start to lay eggs at twenty weeks, it’s time for high-decibel club music in Hi-Fi-outfitted coops. Fong says rhythmically inclined chickens are happier and, thus, lay better eggs.
