Brand X reports that Hollywood’s Cinespace was dealt the touch of death and closed up shop at the start of February. That left celebrity DJ (and son of Benihana’s founder) Steve Aoki without a space for the weekly parties that pushed his record label Dim Mak. To remedy the loss, Aoki suddenly became an equity partner in the space and named it Dim Mak Studios. Aoki is currently running it as a pop-up of sorts (to continue his long-running Tuesday party), while the venue will undergo a remodel and reopen this summer under a new name, with a pub up front and Dim Mak Studios in the back. Aoki says he has partners coming from a place he considers one of the most unforgettable bar experiences in the world, but is, so far, staying mum on their identities. He plans the space to be less like a Hollywood nightclub and possibly more like a grungier small club where music takes precedence over the crowd.
