Stephen Starr has pronounced bottle service dead. And the lounges and clubs that offer it? In a piece in today’s Inquirer about the resurgence of large dance clubs in Center City, written by omnipotent nightlife deity A.D. Amorosi, the restaurateur writes them off as “dated and simply not so sophisticated.” With recently opened Whisper, forthcoming Rumor and Valanni turning part of its space over to the disco-y Social, a handful of entrepreneurs are bringing back sprawling dance floors and trying to re-infect Philly with Saturday Night Fever. But Starr, who had his fill of clubs and nightlife before launching his restaurant empire with Continental in 1995, doesn’t think it’s necessarily a good thing. He says, “I don’t think it’s a positive thing for certain residential areas of downtown to have clubs nearby.” We think the neighborhoods, L&I; and LCB will eventually form similar opinions.
