Santa Monica’s Fukui Sushi Makes Way for Something Pretty Similar

Last spring, Santa Monica’s stretch on Lincoln Blvd. did a little house-cleaning, dropping two sub-par sushi spots. While Yuni Sushi was replaced by the noticeably better MiSoFishy, the closed Fukui Sushi space lingered empty much longer. Last week, Sushi Sapporo took over the location, offering more discount sushi on a massive menu that touts 38 creative, “special rolls,” plus eleven ones you’ve heard of before, a 25 piece combo for $27, and a mix of udon, salads, and terriyaki. The space has been re-worked and refreshed, but essentially, it’s sort of like the transformation at Yuni, a bad, cheap sushi spot has been swapped for an improved cheap sushi spot with a nicer interior and better photos of its rolls on the menu. The food could possibly mark a turn-around; The avocado-heavy “green carpet” shrimp roll looks promising and we appreciate anything named an “Ocean Park” and “Heart Attack” roll, even if, so far, the changes here appear more subtle than we’d anticipated.
