Patti U. Thinks the New Citizen Cake Is Better Than Ever

Based on the diners she observed around her one night, Patricia Unterman concludes, “Citizen Cake is becoming the dessert destination it always wanted to be in its former location in Hayes Valley near the Performing Arts Center, where parking was a nightmare on performance nights and the neighborhood simply was not as casually accessible to [Elizabeth] Falkner’s upscale fan base.” Furthermore, she’s a fan of the “light hand” she finds in the dishes on the dinner menu, which she attributes to Falkner but may be more the hand of chef de cuisine Amy Glaze. She enjoys a cold dish of sliced beets and beef heart with arugula and horseradish cream; and she says “the execution is perfect” on a crisp-skinned dorade fillet. She says the fried-chicken Cobb sandwich at lunch is “satisfying,” and for dessert, her faves: “a new crisp/chewy coconut-peanut butter cookie; violet-cassis macarons; the signature chocolate cupcake with marshmallow filling; the ever popular passion fruit-coconut shag; butterscotch-miso pudding in a glass-like ‘verrine’ and a chocolate mini-tart that oozes buttery caramel at first bite.” [Examiner, Earlier slideshow]
