Painkiller Launching Off-the-Swizzle New Drinks Menu Tonight

We’ve gotten our hands on the new cocktail menu tiki bar Painkiller is launching this evening, and it’s definitely extensive. The list has 102 options, not even counting the scorpion bowls, which owner Giuseppe Gonzalez tells us is the largest number of drinks from an NYC cocktail bar. Among the new additions are the NYPD Blue, a frozen mango daquiri with a blue Hawaiian float, as well as a number of hot drinks including NYC Coffee Grog, made with orange-scented java, butter, a mix of rums, honey, and cream — it’s “a cross between hot buttered rum and coffee,” Gonzalez says. There’s also the unusual, Campari-based Jungle Bird, that combines the Italian aperitif with fresh pineapple, blackstrap rum, lime, and sugar.

The boîte used to offer just a handful of quaffs — drink categories, really — but Gonzalez saw the downside to the “omakase-style” off-menu ordering he encouraged: “[Customers] don’t know what they had before, so I can’t build upon it.” Plus, he wants drinkers to think beyond the same old thing. “It’s about time people stop ordering mai tais and piña coladas and playing it safe.” After tonight, you’ll have no excuse.
