The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles is warning L.A.’s ice cream and candy vendors, at least one of whom rides his bike 20-30 miles daily to bring scoops of sugary sunshine into our lives, to prepare for police encounters following the arrest of Bianca Perez, an undocumented vendor who was cited for a trifle in Van Nuys and arrested due to her immigration status. The organization is starting a campaign to educate vendors about their legal rights and is assisting Perez’s defense against deportation in court. Meanwhile, can’t the powers that be unearth some more whale meat or smuggled turtles, rather than keep gunning for our favorite foods? [NBC]
