What to Eat at Straw, That Carny Restaurant, Opening Today

Photo: Grub Street

Carnival-themed Hayes Valley eatery Straw (203 Octavia at Page), which we showed you a sneak peek of last week, opens to the public today for lunch and dinner. They’ll be open seven days a week, and it turns out, the menu’s not just a one-note joke! Dinner entrés for the opening month are “inspired by the world renowned street food cuisine of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival,” and they include crab beignets with jalapeño-cheddar cream, and a creole flank steak with red beans and rice. Also, there’s a primary focus on sandwiches at both dinner and brunch, and a selection of appropriately whimsical desserts, like an “inverted” root beer float (root beer gelato with cream soda), orange-blossom cotton candy, and a funnel cake with strawberries and balsamic whipped cream. See the full details below.

Menus subject to change.
