Is River North becoming the new center of Japanese bar food? With Takashi’s Slurping Turtle already set to open this summer, now comes news that Union Sushi + Barbecue Bar plans to open in May. The project is partnership between Mike Schatzman and local chef Worachai Thapthimkuna, who had previously worked at Sushi Wabi. Sure, we may finally have a successful izakaya in town these days, but we don’t have a kushiyaki? Wait, what the hell is a kushiyaki?
According to Chicago Mag, that refers to barbecue in the name, and you can expect all kinds of flesh to be cooked on a robata grill. There will also, obviously, be sushi.
While you wait for the opening, do check out the blog that Schatzman and Thapthimkuna created while doing research around the world. It contains a video chronicling their tour through New York, London, Hong Kong, Phuket, Bangkok, and Tokyo. Hilarity ensues. Watch it all below.
