Steve Jobs, ‘You,’ Among Those Named Most Powerful People in Food (Huh?)

Want to get your ire up over another dumb ranked list? The Daily Meal — edited, we should note, by recent “Grub Street Diet” subject Colman Andrews — just published a ranking of the nation’s 50 Most Powerful People in Food, and this one is bound to piss a few of you off — then again, that piss-off factor is why arbitrary lists play so well on the webs in the first place. In fact, we think they might just be trying to piss us off! For instance, how dare they put the CEO of Monsanto three pegs higher than Alice Waters? (Even though, sure, he probably has an exponentially wider influence on how the country eats.) And WTF with putting “You” in the No. 1 spot? Time tried that with their Person of the Year in 2006, and you know what? It just bugged everyone.

Don’t even get us started on the fact that restaurant-ruiner Guy Fieri is on this list at all, and in the top twenty no less. That’s higher than Thomas Keller, Grant Achatz, José Andrés, and Tom Colicchio (but lower than Rachael Ray, naturally). Whatever, Daily Meal. Nice try.
