On Meatless Mondays Fish Counts as Meat

Is fish considered meat? If it’s a Friday and you’re Catholic, the answer is no. But for just about everyone else, fish is most certainly meat. So it struck as being just a little odd that the Inquirer’s food section today included a piece about Meatless Mondays that features a recipe for salmon in a Bengali mustard sauce. It looks like a delicious dish, but it seems to us that meat is clearly its key ingredient. To get a second opinion on the matter, we asked local Meatless Monday expert Joy Manning, who is also the nutrition editor for Prevention magazine. “While fish is a healthy alternative to beef, it is definitely a kind of meat,” Manning told Grub Street. “Vegetarians don’t eat it (though “pescatarians” do) and it isn’t really true to the spirit of the Meatless Monday movement.” She added that there are many “terrific truly meatless recipes” on her blog OysterEvangelist.com.
