Oh, Snap! List of Country’s 64 Best Wieners Omits Several Top Dogs

After determining the best pizza in the land, Serious Eats and Rachael Ray have teamed up to name the best hot dog. They’ve pared the bracket down to the final sixteen, but never mind that — we have a problem with their picks for the initial 64! In New York, Bark and Crif Dogs made the initial list along with Papaya King, but where’s Gray’s? Guess judges Ed Levine, Adam Kuban, and Hawk Krall are partial to the King (which came first, after all), but Gray’s doesn’t even merit a mention?

Likewise in the highly contentious world of New Jersey’s Italian hot dogs, Dickie Dee’s was never even cited even though it was set to go up against Jimmy Buff’s in Food Wars. Not a shock since Jimmy Buff’s is older, but what is rather surprising is that in Detroit, Lafayette Coney Island gets a nod, but no mention of its neighbor American Coney Island — despite the fact that Food Wars and Food Feuds saw fit to cover the rivalry. And speaking of Coney Island, no respect for the original Nathan’s?

Meanwhile, in L.A., the obligatory tourist spots Oki Dog and Pink’s are in the running, but no mention of local favorites like Slaw Dogs, Skooby’s, and Dodger Dogs. And in San Francisco, where are the uncured, bacon-stuffed dogs at 4505 Meats? That’s just the start of it, really. Check out the top 64, 32, and 16 over at Every Day With Rachael Ray and let us know what you think.
