Daddy O’s: San Francisco’s First (?) Asian-Run Soul Food Restaurant

We didn’t realize it ourselves, but newly open SoMa restaurant Daddy O’s (294 9th Street at Folsom) is not your typical soul food restaurant. New American Media does up a little profile of the owners, Sunny Qin, a Chinese-born restaurateur, and her husband Ron Hollins, an African-American cop who’s served in the SFPD for 28 years. “I didn’t feel that opening up a Chinese restaurant would be the way to go in San Francisco,” says Qin, but nonetheless she and her family wanted to get back in the restaurant business. They’ve hired an outspoken African-American chef, Kevin Warren (who, incidentally, is set to make an appearance soon on America’s Test Kitchen), and they hope the restaurant becomes “a bridge between the African-American and Asian communities” in the city.
